The packaging says ‘crisp, sumptuous, intense’. I’m not so sure its all of those. When I purchased Dufflet’s Bittersweet Chocolate Crackle in the maple cashew flavour, I thought I was in for a real treat. I’m familiar with Dufflet from my Toronto days when I owned a business near their dessert shop on Queen Street West. They were and still are renowned for their cakes for 30 years. No one does it better than them and their desserts are made from premium all natural ingredients.
The photography of the chocolate on the box makes your mouth water and cashews are one of my fav nuts. The person at the chocolate bar at Urban Fare also recommended them. The first thing I noticed when I took them out of the box is how little there was of it. Yes it says 150g on the box but I was looking at the dimensions of the box than the weight and perceived there would be more. They may have needed to have a box large enough to hold the bag inside expanded with air so the crackle wouldn’t break as easily in transit.
The crackle is similar to a brittle and is a mixture of Belgian dark chocolate, cashews and you would think maple syrup. Now that I look at the ingredients, it doesn’t list maple but maybe it’s in the second to last ingredient, natural flavour? When I bit into the crackle, I couldn’t distinguish that the nuts were cashews because of the strong burnt flavour. The maple tasted more like molasses and as the nuts and chocolate were consumed in my mouth, I was left with a chewy maple flavoured wad that stuck to my teeth or should I say my caps.
In its defense, my partner didn’t like it at first but then it grew on him and he gave it more marks. This product also won an award, the SOFI 2008 Silver, at the Fancy Food Show in New York so it really is a matter of personal taste. My review is only my opinion and you will have to judge it for yourself.
